What Does a MERV Rating Actually Capture?
MERV ratings describe which particles a filter traps and which slip through. Learn what MERV 6 captures, why gaskets matter, and how to maintain filters.

A MERV rating is a number that describes how well an air filter captures particles of different sizes as air passes through it. A higher number means the filter traps a larger share of smaller particles. It does not describe airflow, pressure drop, filter life, or whether the filter fits its frame snugly.
That last point matters more than most homeowners expect. A filter only does its job on the air that actually crosses the media. Air that slips around the edges is unfiltered air, no matter what number is printed on the cardboard. Precision work starts with what the hand holds: a bench of fine setting tools belongs to the same culture as a well-seated filter, where the gasket matters as much as the rating.
What does the MERV scale actually measure?
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is a laboratory rating of how efficiently a filter removes particles across a range of sizes, usually grouped into three bands: larger particles like pollen and dust mite debris, medium particles like mold spores and cement dust, and very small particles like smoke and bacteria.
A filter is tested at a specific airflow, and the rating reflects its average performance across those bands. That is why two filters with the same MERV can behave differently in a real system: real airflow, dust loading, and frame fit all change the outcome.
Which particles does a MERV 6 filter trap?
A MERV 6 filter captures a meaningful share of larger and medium particles, including pollen, dust mite debris, and many mold spores. It is not designed to capture the smallest smoke and virus-sized particles at high efficiency. For most homes, MERV 6 is a reasonable baseline rather than a high-performance target.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR program describes certified homes as equipped with a "properly installed MERV 6 or better filter in ducted heating and cooling systems, installed with a gasket to ensure air goes through it rather than around it" (ENERGY STAR indoor air quality features). Two details in that sentence deserve attention: the filter rating, and the gasket.
Which particles pass through even a good filter?
Very small particles, including fine smoke and some virus-sized aerosols, pass through filters with lower MERV ratings at high rates. That is a limitation of the media, not a defect. If a filter is rated only for larger particles, expecting it to remove fine combustion smoke is a mismatch between the rating and the goal.
This is why filter choice should follow the problem. Does a higher MERV always mean better performance?
No. A higher MERV filter is denser, and denser media resists airflow more. On a system not designed for it, that extra resistance can reduce airflow, which affects comfort and equipment operation. The right question is not "what is the highest number I can buy" but "what can this system move air through comfortably while still catching what I care about."

ENERGY STAR's own guidance is straightforward: check the filter every month during heavy use months, change it if it looks dirty after a month, and at minimum change it every three months (ENERGY STAR heating and cooling guidance). Why does the gasket and the frame matter so much?
Because filter media only filters the air that passes through it. Gaps around a filter let air travel the easy path. The ENERGY STAR description of certified homes highlights a gasket specifically so that air goes through the filter rather than around it. That is a fit issue, not a rating issue, and it is often the difference between a filter that performs at its rating and one that performs well below it.

How does filter maintenance relate to the rest of the system?
A filter is one component of an air path that includes ducts, returns, and the equipment itself. ENERGY STAR notes that sealing and insulating ducts can improve heating and cooling efficiency substantially, and that ducts running through attics, crawlspaces, unheated basements, or garages are the first priority (ENERGY STAR heating and cooling guidance). A well-rated filter on a leaky duct system still leaves the delivered air path imperfect.

What should a homeowner actually do?

Then set a realistic maintenance rhythm: monthly checks during heavy heating and cooling seasons, and replacement at least every three months, sooner if the filter is visibly loaded.
Then match the rating to the goal. If the concern is general dust, pollen, and mold spores, a mid-range rating is typically enough.
