Do Heat Pumps Need Different Ventilation?
How a heat pump works with your ductwork and fresh air: ducted versus ductless, filter and duct basics, and when ventilation changes.

A heat pump can usually run on the same ductwork your furnace or air conditioner already uses. It does not require a fundamentally different ventilation system. What it may need is ductwork and airflow that are in good shape, because a heat pump moves air differently than a furnace and is less forgiving of leaking or undersized ducts.
This is a practical look at how a heat pump interacts with the ducts and fresh air in a normal home. It is about the ventilation side of the question, not which model to buy.
Can a heat pump use existing ductwork?
In many homes, yes. According to ENERGY STAR, an air source heat pump can be connected to the conventional forced-air ductwork found in most American homes, and in many climate zones it can serve as a replacement when an air conditioner or furnace needs to be replaced.
Because it is distribution rather than a new type of duct system, the practical question is condition. A duct network that was marginal for a furnace can behave differently for a heat pump, especially in winter, when the air coming out of the vents is generally cooler than what a combustion furnace delivered.
That cooler supply air is the key detail. A furnace pushes out hot air, so a room warms quickly even if the ducts are leaky or the airflow is uneven. A heat pump tends to run longer at a lower supply temperature, so it depends more on the ducts delivering the right amount of air to the right rooms. Does a ducted heat pump need different filters?
No special filter, but filter condition matters more. Heat pumps move a large volume of air at a moderate temperature, and a clogged filter restricts that airflow. Reduced airflow means the system works harder and rooms lose comfort.
For ducted heating and cooling systems, ENERGY STAR certified homes include a properly installed MERV 6 or better filter, with a gasket so air goes through the filter rather than around it, and positioned for routine maintenance. That last point is easy to overlook: a filter that is hard to reach tends not to get changed. Does a ductless mini split need ventilation at all?
A ductless mini split does not use central ductwork for heating and cooling. It mounts on an interior wall or ceiling with an outdoor unit, which is why it suits homes without existing ducts or additions where running ducts is difficult.
But no ducts does not mean no ventilation needs. Ductless systems distribute conditioned air within a space and do not by themselves bring in fresh outdoor air or remove moisture and pollutants at the source. Those jobs still belong to the ventilation equipment in kitchens, bathrooms and any whole-house fresh air arrangement.
That distinction matters because people sometimes assume a ductless install simplifies everything. It simplifies distribution. It does not remove the need to think about fresh air.
How does a heat pump change fresh air needs?
It does not change the need for fresh air, but it can change how fresh air enters and how it is tempered. A heat pump does not burn fuel and therefore produces no direct combustion emissions such as nitrogen dioxide or carbon monoxide from the heating process itself.

Does a heat pump behave differently in winter?
It runs longer and steadier, and that changes how ventilation equipment should behave. ENERGY STAR recommends sticking with a steady temperature rather than setback scheduling, because heat pumps do not save energy the way a furnace does by being turned down while you are away.
The same logic spills into air quality. A steady indoor temperature tends to mean stable relative humidity, and humidity affects both comfort and how a home feels.
